Biruktawit Getahun (Betty G)

Bruktawit Getahun aka Betty G started showing signs of a creative soul at a young age. She started singing while in high school at Lycée Gebre Mariam, a French school in Addis Ababa. Betty’s love for music was unstoppable so her mother asked her to make a promise: If Betty G wanted to pursue her career in music, she first had to go to a university and earn at least an undergraduate degree. Betty G not only kept her promise but also surpassed it by graduating with dual degree in 2009; in office management from Commercial College of Addis Abeba University as well as in general management from a French University called Université de L’IAE Poitier via correspondence. Betty G worked with renowned Ethiopian artists such as Teddy Afro, Theodros Kassahun (Teddy Afro), Jhonny Raga, Zeritu Kebede, Natenael Ayalew (Nhatty Man) and many more. In addition to Amharic, her ability to sing in English and French brought her opportunities to collaborate with international artists such as the Nigerian artist Ras Kimono and the jazz artist Tomas Doncker. During her 2 years stay in the USA, Betty G had a chance to perform in various stages and clubs including Blue Note Jazz Club in New York. She is also working on her album with a group called One Vision Production under Xposure Entertainment. Betty G’s captivating participation in Coke Studio, an African fusion music show on DSTV produced by Coca-Cola at Film Studios in Nairobi, has earned her recognition on continental level. She’s been paired with Cameroon’s group X-Maleya to record original tracks, collaborations and cover songs that became hits. In November 2015 Betty G released her debut album Manew Fitsum, which was highly accepted by music enthusiasts all over the world. In June 2018 her second album Wegegta was realised in which her fans witnessed Betty G’s musical growth and vocal authenticity. Betty G uses her stardom to create awareness on certain social concerns and promote worthy causes such as women’s issues, refugee crisis and global warming. She currently holds the title of Ambassador for Studio Samuel, a non-governmental organization that helps empower women in Ethiopia so they can overcome poverty and change their lives.
