Khadija Qalanjo

Khadija Qalanjo (Somali: Khadiija Qalanjo, Arabic: خديجة قالانجو‎) is a popular Somali singer and folklore dancer in the 1970s and 1980s. Qalanjo was born in Somalia. She was the first Miss Somalia. Qalanjo was the singer that started the modernization of the Somali folk song tradition of dhaanto, introducing instrumentation where hitherto it had been performed without. Qalanjo's onstage performances often featured seductive hip-swaying and elaborate hand-gesturing. Her songs usually dealt with the pangs and joys of love unrequited, lost and regained. She currently lives in London, United Kingdom. Qalanjo belongs to the Jibril Younis subclan of the Makahiil Samaroon (Gadabuursi) sub-division of the Mandaluug sub-clan of the Dir clan family.
